Trying to identify a common factor amongst my clients that are
experiencing this issue - How many of you have the Google and/or Yahoo
dekstop search engine installed?

Curious, because not everybody here in my office seems to be affected,
though some definitely are...

How many of you have the Google and/or Yahoo Desktop search engines
installed?

Thanks, -JZ

It's not really an Outlook only problem. It happens after some crash or set
of crashes but the diagnostics are coming from another group at MS. Whether
or not the crashes are new is one thing, the faulty diagnosis is another.

I have every update here for Outlook 2003 on my main workstation and the
only time I personally have seen this was after crashing testing a problem
addin a client wanted me to debug. Other than that I haven't seen it. So the
first thing that MS needs to determine is what's causing the crashes to
begin with and fix that where ever it is (it could be Word or IE crashing
Outlook for example, Outlook uses libraries from both or even from OE). Then
there's the matter of the faulty diagnostics display.

Neither is installed here but I've only seen the crash once.

Just found this thread and wanted to add my 2 cents...

New Dell computer (received 12/14/2006) with Office and Google desktop
preloaded plus the IE7 upgrade. At startup all MS updates were added. I have
had this issue of freeze up and the "winfax pro" message. In my setup this
doesn't happen until I have my fairly large contact folder (1000 names or
so)loaded into the default folder. I can load in another folder without
problem. Outlook behaves "normally" but as I load contacts it begins to use
additional CPU time... up to a constant 50% with my 1000 or so contacts. That
is when I get the winfax pro message.

I have uninstalled and installed Outlook and Office in various combinations
with no effect. The detect and repair fuction allowed me to start over as a
first run but there does seem to be an add-in or .dll affecting the install.

Now let me share what happened one time in my chain of events... as I tried
to startup after a crash a message came up stating that an "add-in" had been
detected to have created the crash and Outlook was going to disable. From
that point on everything started working perfectly... just as you would
normally expect. Leaving no "good thing" alone, I added an add-on Outlook
application (Avidian Prophet 4.0) and everything started acting up again.

Today, I'm up and running with my default contact list at less than 25 names
and all other contacts in a separate folder . Advian Prophet is running in
the non default folder and all is functioning pretty well. I've created work
arounds but wish I could use Outlook as I use to...

Make sure there's no trial Symantec software installed, as is Dell's wont.

Hi Brian,

There may be Symantec software, which could be related, but in most of the
cases I'm aware there's no Symantec software installed at all. That's
certainly the case here, although I've only had that crash and WinFax report
once.

My MS contacts haven't heard anything back yet on this problem, I pinged
them again yesterday to remind them about it. MS and the surrounding area
were without power for days and many offices at MS were flooded, so things
aren't really normal there though plus the holidays are coming up so people
are out. We'll just have to wait for a resolution from MS I guess.

I found this conversation while searching for a resolution to a problem for
one of our end-users. It seems that he is encountering the same problem as
described previously. I don't have the text for the EXACT error message, but
this is what he sent me:

"My Outlook crashed this afternoon, followed by a solution message from
Microsoft attributing the problem to Symantec WinFax Pro and directing me to
the Symantec website for a solution. "

I know for a fact that Winfax Pro has never been installed on this machine,
so I would have to agree that there's a problem with the error reporting.
Anybody have any ideas?

What is the exact error message you get? The original post was a reply from
either MS or Symantec about an error message not specified.

What version of Outlook are you using? Provide all the details you can so
people can answer your question properly.

I got the same error message, and I've NEVER installed winfax pro on this
machine. (I haven't used it for years, and have the program on 3.5"
floppies,
and this machine has no such drive.)

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?
Thanks
bb
