Default scanpst.exe issue in Outlook 2007

Hi NG,

a user wants to repair his pst-file with "scanpst.exe". But everytime he
starts the program he receives following error message (translated from
german):

"The file C:\Programs\Microsoft Office\Office12\SCANPST.EXE is been
using by an other application. Close Microsoft Office Outlook and all
other applications which using email and try it again."

But no applications are running. Even though he starts Windows in safe
mode (no autostarts will be loaded) he receives this message.

Any hints?

I find it very offensive that someone looking for support for MS Office is
directed to a $249 "solution". Shouldn't Microsoft provide working tools
with their expen$ive software?

The tool that MS provides works. That doesn't mean some company can't write
a tool that might work better.

Brian, the tool SCANPST.EXE delivered with Office 2007 *does not* work. I
have the new Office installed on my XP Home system and double clicking the
program doesn't start it and doesn't deliver an error message.

Copying the PST file to a system with Office 2003, I could easily repair the
damaged file.

Maybe something is wrong with your installation? Scanpst.exe of Office
2007 does work.

The problem experienced when using a scanpst.exe 2007 is on account of the fact that, the utility is not able to repair the file, it either is itself damaged, or the issue to be resolved is severe. Likewise, large sized PST files could also lead to such a problem. As the problem continues in safe mode too, things are definitely not OK, and third party tool is required to be used.
