I want the deleted items to be cleared on closing Outlook 2007.
I have ticked the appropriate box for that to happen, but it isn't happening.

Is Outlook closing properly? Next time you close it, open Task Manager and
see if OUTLOOK.EXE still appears in the list of Processes. If so, something
(possibly an add-in) is keeping Outlook open and that's why the deleted items
folder isn't being emptied.

What type of account? Perhaps Outlook isn't closing properly. Use Task
manager's Processes tab to see if OUTLOOK.EXE is gone.
