Well . . . it appears to have worked because when I downloaded the message,
it appears in my viewing pane.

Its quite large, however, at 1280 x 453, but only 51KB.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially likely in the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity...

File | Identities | Add new identity

Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File | Identities | Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:

Answer remains the same, no.

OE File | Identities | Manage Identities: Is there only one (1) identity
listed here and is it named Main Identity?

One (1) and only one. Your choice:

From OE6's Store Folder: C:\Documents and Settings\AnnaMarie\Local
Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{FD825E86-00EC-4A4D-A6BE-9678C1646F37}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

From Windows Explorer: C:\Documents and Settings\AnnaMarie\Local
Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{FD825E86-00EC-4A4D-A6BE-9678C1646F37}

Again, one (1) and only one.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

Okay, to avoid Reposting, I am going to answer ALL three (3) questions as
follows:

- Avira AntiVir Personal, version 8.1.0.326, and, yes, it is current 19
MAR
09
- Avira AntiVir Personal, version 8.1.0.326 (no Defender - low tech, in my
opinion)
- No 3rd Party - Genuine Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS)
per Windows XP2 spec

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

NOPE.

[I disagree with you about not installing SP3 but we'll save that for
later.]

I believe Elvis said it best . . . Thank you. Thank you very much.

Hmmm . . . then again, it may not be. I may try this, Robear.

Understood.

The problem I have should NOT exist since I NEVER use the Inbox or Sent
Items to archive messages - only a fool would do that. I always create new
folders or use existing [previously created] folders to archive messages.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

folder every time I close OE6.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working

The problem I have should NOT exist since I FREQUENTLY manually compact ALL
FOLDERS while WORKING OFFLINE.

Compacting is taking place.

The problem I have should NOT exist since I NEVER CANCEL automatic

have I ever shutdown my PC when automatic compacting was taking place.

Default Compact All Folders - automated setting far less than 100

Any thoughts on my UNEXPECTED SURPRISE . . .

Clean Up Now... resets the Compact Check Count to 0, but once I close OE6,
it increments by 1 (as it should, I believe).

I believe that, somewhere in my past postings in this newsgroup (maybe
another), a MS-MVP once told me that (essentially) Clean Up Now had no
effect on the Compact Check Counter. Whether my memory is right or wrong,
that point is moot now.

I had no idea Compact Check Counter was RESET to ZERO each time I executed
Clean Up Now.

Does this surprise anyone else, or am I the only mental midgit on this
issue?

When it's incrementing the msimn.exe icon is different.
I wonder why that is? In any case do you know what
you were doing at those times, e.g. opening or closing OE?

Also, I just realized that something we don't see which
could be significant is the PID. E.g. that could clarify
if each of those SetValue instances were done by a
different instance of the msimn.exe task. I can't remember
if RegMon allows you to show more columns which would
give you that data item or not... Nope. Only ProcMon
provides that detail.

Another thing that would be helpful I think, which would
also be available by ProcMon (or perhaps using a less restrictive
filter in RegMon) is knowing if some other task is *causing*
msimn.exe to do this. E.g. I think that that is how it works
with WS. WS has to use OE to open an .EML or .NWS
file and then close it again. So certainly, if that was
happening while OE was not already running it would
explain the symptom. msimn.exe would have to be opened
and closed not just used via DDE.

Hmm... you can probably simulate the same thing that WS
would be doing, simply by opening a few messages
while OE is not running. E.g. if you have some .EML
or .NWS files saved and the default open action for
those extensions' file types specifies that msimn.exe be
used, then opening those messages while OE was not
running would cause msimn.exe to be started, executed
and ended. That would probably result in an incrementation
of the compaction counter. Similarly (!), starting an E-mail
with mailto: while OE was not active initially might
have the same effect. That's not something that WS
would be doing of course but it is something that you
might be doing without realizing the consequences of it. ; )

Good luck

Robert
