Default Compact All Folders - automated setting far less than 100

Hi,

Recently, and I do not have a precise date, Outlook Express 6 and its
"automatic" counter to Compact All Folders has become a problem.

I say a problem because, as I once understood, OE6 it is supposed to
automatically Compact All Folders every 100 (something like) uses, but the
"automated counter" feature has been DEMANDING compaction every 3 or 4
days - far less than 100 uses - more like, less than 20 uses.

Anyone know a fix - or how to repair this OE6 problem?

Thanks in advance for your support.

AnnaMarie )

P.S. On a related note, a MS-MVP once suggested that a manual Compact All
Folders, set to Work Offline with Local Folders highlighted, resets the
"automatic" counter. Since reading his suggestion, in my experience, this
is not true for my OE6 version 6.00.2900.2180 [xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158].
However, I have been manually compacting all folders (according to his
instructions) about once a week - again, far less than 100 uses.

Is Windows (Desktop) Search installed and did the behavior start after you'd
installed WinXP SP3 (if SP3 is, in fact, installed on the machine in
question)?

In a given 7-day period, how often do you open & close OE? How about in a
typical 3- or 4-day period?

How many messages are in your Inbox folder? Do you make sure Sent Items and
Deleted Items folders are empty *before* compacting all folders manually?

No, no. I refuse to install SP3.

I am running SP2, updated thru 18 MAR 09.

In a given 7-day period, how often do you open & close OE? How about in a
typical 3- or 4-day period?

Hmmm . . . I'd say around 5X per day . . . therefore, around 35 times a
week.

How many messages are in your Inbox folder? Do you make sure Sent Items
and Deleted Items folders are empty *before* compacting all folders
manually?

ZERO. ALWAYS!!!

Repost: Is Windows (Desktop) Search installed?

OE File | Identities | Manage Identities: Is there only one (1) identity
listed here and is it named Main Identity?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

[I disagree with you about not installing SP3 but we'll save that for
later.]

Hi again, Robear! )

Repost: Is Windows (Desktop) Search installed?

Answer remains the same, no.

OE File | Identities | Manage Identities: Is there only one (1) identity
listed here and is it named Main Identity?

One (1) and only one. Your choice:

From OE6's Store Folder: C:\Documents and Settings\AnnaMarie\Local
Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{FD825E86-00EC-4A4D-A6BE-9678C1646F37}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

From Windows Explorer: C:\Documents and Settings\AnnaMarie\Local
Settings\Application Data\Identities\{FD825E86-00EC-4A4D-A6BE-9678C1646F37}

Again, one (1) and only one.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

Okay, to avoid Reposting, I am going to answer ALL three (3) questions as
follows:

- Avira AntiVir Personal, version 8.1.0.326, and, yes, it is current 19 MAR
09
- Avira AntiVir Personal, version 8.1.0.326 (no Defender - low tech, in my
opinion)
- No 3rd Party - Genuine Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
per Windows XP2 spec

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

NOPE.

[I disagree with you about not installing SP3 but we'll save that for
later.]

I believe Elvis said it best . . . Thank you. Thank you very much.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially likely in the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity...

File | Identities | Add new identity

Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File | Identities | Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:

If the count is changing that much you could Run... RegMon
filtering on *compact* to see all the accesses for
that value and thus identify which program(s) are
doing it and when.

Note: I am suggesting RegMon specifically instead of
ProcMon because I think it would be easier to use for
this particular application. Both are available from TechNet.

Good luck

Hi Robert! )

Thanks for a GREAT recommendation - I will download the program, install it,
and hopefully discover a few interesting things to share after a few days.
