Default POP3 address in account changes back to 127.0.0.1 after restart

I have setup accounts in my new pc with OE6. After computer restarts the pop3
address changes back to loopback address and the pop3 port number changes
back to the default. Thus I am not able to receive my gmails. Does anybody
know how I can fix this annoying problem.

This is usually caused by scanning e-mail, or an anti-spam program.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

Bruce,
I too had a similar problem wherby the account connections settings (POP3
server and SMTP server) where not being retained after a reboot. This was
also on a new computer. Reading below I disabled first of all "Mcafee
VirusScan/VirusShield/Scan email and attachments" but the the same error
occurred trying to connect to the POP3 server on 127.0.0.1. I then disabled
McAfee spamkiller as well and the problem remained - i finally uninstalled
all of Mcafee virus protection and the problem still remains. Each time I
rebooted and started clean before I tested Outlook. In the current scenarion
(without any Mcafee virus protection) the dialogue box
(OE/Tools/Accounts/Propoerties/Servers) shows the correct server settings and
they get retained between reboots but OE still fails connecting to the POP3
server on 127.0.0.1.

This situation is complicated by the fact that i am debugging my mothers
cumpter 4,000 miles away in the UK. Any advise would be very much appreciated.

Thx,
Andy

Get rid of McAfee altogether.

I use, and recommend, AVG Free:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
or:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww

When prompted, choose Custom Installation and *uncheck* e-mail scanning when
you see the option.

Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't
know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them.

Bruce,
1. Appreciate the guidance on the Virus protection software. Thx.
But . . .
2. The POP3 server connection problem I have currently occurs without any
virus protection software loaded at all (Security Centre shows it as not
loaded). How do I fix this problem ? Happy to load the new Virus Protection
software once i can get her email working properly.
thx,
Andy

You say that it shows the correct server settings, but does not connect on
127.0.0.1.

127.0.0.1 is not the correct server setting and it shouldn't connect. (???)

Default POP3 address in account changes back to 127.0.0.1 after restar

Bruce the "correct" server settings are as follows and are shown as such in
teh Server dialogue box and they also work fine when I replicate the scenario
on my XP test machine :

POP3 Server: mail.virgin.net
SMTP Server: smtp.ntlworld.com
Account name: "correct login name for my mother's virgin account"
Password: "correct password for my mother virgin account"

Despite these settings all being fine - when send/recv is pressed she still
get's the error message that she cannot connect to the POP3 server on
127.0.0.1. IE OE is trying to connect to 127.0.0.1 despite the server
settings being set differently in the dialogue box.

What do you suggest ?

Andy

If you are positive those server settings are correct, remove the account
entirely, reboot and add it back. See if that helps.
