I have a new PDA/Phone and am new to Outlook. I want to use the PDA for
contacts, calendar, and tasks, but do NOT want to use email with the PDA.
Can I sync from outlook without having to use email? If so, how do i set it
up. I am having a lot of problems and am not familiar with Outlook. I have
2003.

Outlook has nothing to do with it, and ActiveSync has everything to do with
it. When you create your partnershop, simply exclude the Inbox
synchronization option.

Thanks so much for the quick response. I have been having a lot of problems
with Outlook. I am not sure how to set it up. I originally chose (because I
didn't know what I was doing at the time) to set up as Windows Exchange.
That seems to be my problem now. It wouldn't let me delete the Windows
Exchange. I have since uninstalled and reinstalled Office twice. When I
reinstalled, I expected to go through the Outlook Wizard to set up but
instead it opened just as it was before I had uninstalled. Then I was able
to delete the Windows Exchange (and the "fake" account that the Verizon
people had me set up). Now I don't know what to do and no one at verizon or
Samsung can help. When I click on Calendar, Contacts, Tasks..., I get an
error message that says "Outlook could not start because a data file to send
and receive mail could not be found. To add a data file, such as a personal
folder file, double-click the Mail icon in the Windows Control Panel." Can
you help? I am so frustrated and about to return my phone/pda because the
whole reason I purchased it was to be able to sync between the pda and
computer. Also, I should tell you that I have Windows Vista and am using
Windows Mobile Device Center (not ActiveSync which is not compatible with the
640bit Vista). Thanks again!!

Thanks again. First, I can't find the Mail folder on the Control Panel.
That is similar to what the error message said for me to do, but I couldn't
find it then either. Also, since I am not going to be using this as email
and was never given and email account for outlook, how do know what type of
an account I need to create? Does the display name matter? What do I use as
the email username? What do I use as the addresses for incoming and out
going mail (I think they are called the server names)? I am assuming I need
to create this account in order to use outlook, even if i am not using it for
email.

about and to be able to give me some help!

Are you using 64 bit Vista? If so, the Control Panel will have an option to
enable the 32 bit Control Panel and that's where you'll find the Mail
applet. If you're not using 64 bit Vista, what are you using?

If you never intend to use Outlook for mail, you can create a mail profile
containing no accounts. Here's how. This process will start you with a
completely new, empty set of default folders. If this isn't what you want,
write back and I'll tell you how to modify what I'm about to write so that
you can use any data you have in Outlook currently.

Since you've already created a mail profile and it contains an Exchange
account, start the Mail applet and click E-mail Accounts, then Next.
Select the Exchange account and click Remove. You'll be asked if you're
sure. Click Yes, then Finish. Now click the Data Files button, click Add,
then OK. Give your PST a name. For my experiment, I used "No Mail.pst".
Click OK. Give the PST a display name (i.e., what will show in the Folder
List within Outlook as the root name of the PST). Again, I chose "No Mail"
for when I tried this.Click OK, then Close. Now, click E-mail Accounts
again, select the "View or change existing e-mail accounts" radio button and
click Next. There will be a "Deliver new e-mail to the following location"
drop-down at the lower left. Change it to indicate the name of the PST you
created. (In my case, I changed it to "No Mail".) Click Finish, then OK.
Then, click Data Files one more time to verify that the new PST is the mail
delivery location. If you have any other PST listed there, you can delete
it by selecting it and clicking Remove, then Yes. Click Close, then Close,
then OK. You can close Control Panel now.

Start Outlook. You'll see "Outlook 2003 Setup". Click Next. You'll see
the "Account Configuration" dialogue asking if you want to configure an
email account. Select the No radio button, then Next. You;ll be asked if
you want to create a data file. Check the box labeled "Continue with no
e-mail support" and click Finish. Outlook will start and you'll see all
your folders. You'll have all the standard mail folders like Inbox, Outbox,
Junk E-mail, and Sent Items (because Outlook ALWAYS creates those folders in
the delivery location PST), but obviously you'll never use them. Configure
your sync software (it should have come with your phone or can be obtained
from the phone bendor's web site) to sync those items you want. If your
phone is mail-enabled and you receive mail on it, you can, if you wish,
configure the sync software to include the Inbox and keep reference copies
of your mail in Outlook's Inbox.
