Default Hotmail no longer allows email access via Outlook Express for free email accounts?

I have our oldest, original email account (an msn account from 1997) running through Outlook Express, and also have three other hotmail accounts there, used by various family members. On December 29th, when I got up to check my email, I got this error message for ONE of the accounts. I took it as legit, and figured that soon I would get error messages for the other accounts also. So far, none. Only this account is affected - and it no longer receives or is able to send any mail through OE.

Anyone know why only this one account is affected? Is this legit?
Thanks so much!

WebDAV access, the scripting language Microsoft uses for their HTTPmail
servers (i.e., Hotmail) and supported by their e-mail client (Outlook and
Outlook Express), was discontinued from free Hotmail accounts back on
29-Nov-2004. Free accounts created after that date are not permitted WebDAV
access which forces them to use the webmail interface. Free accounts
created before that date got grandfathered in to continue allowing WebDAV
access (but Microsoft can change that at any time because, well, it's free
and Microsoft decides what, if any, service they will provide). Paid
accounts had WebDAV access before that date and continue to have WebDAV
access after that date.

It sounds like you have a grandfathered account. So either you let the
account sit around unused for too long (90 days) or Microsoft is changing
their policy regarding the grandfathered accounts.

If all you want is some freebie e-mail account, start looking at opening a
Yahoo account and using YahooPOPs to access it.

See also, as a Hotmail alternative, POP Peeper. www.poppeeper.com - The
application used to only check various freemail accounts but now it's a full
blown client with send and text or html preview etc...

You can also try removing the account from within OE and then recreating it.
I imagine that's where I'd start.

Never post a real address in a public newsgroup or forum!

Is this a sudden, new problem? When was the last time you accessed this
account in OE or at www.hotmail.com?

Are you an MSN Premium subscriber?
