Default Cannot receive Email

W2k sp4 on a little desktop. ATT DSL Pro for many, many years.

Outlook 2k sp3 settings:
incoming - pop.att.yahoo.com
out(SMTP) - smtp.att.yahoo.com
inetab32.dll
MAPI 1.0 Service Providers for Outlook 9 IMEP
v. 4.40.46000
12/8/1998 3:53:54 PM

For a week or so, I can't receive O2k mail. Worked OK for 5+ years previous to
that. Tells me it cannot reach pop.att.yahoo.com, but I get replies when I
ping it. Browser-mail confirms lots of Email waiting.

With authentication, I get an unreadable flash-popup. Without I usually get
"Some msgs couldn't be retrieved from server ... usually server or net problems
.... contact admin."

Any ideas? Theres no real evidence of server or net problems.

Thx,
Puddin'

Have you verified the size of your PST? O2K has a limit of 2 GB max, it can
become questionable any time after 1.6 GB.

You might try SCANPST. I had a user with the same problem recently and
SCANPST fixed her up. See if this helps:

Again, worth a try.

I ran it twice: it found no errors.

But I liked your "Troubleshooting Outlook" page. Could have used it a
time or 2 in recent years. Know where to find it now.

Thanks,

What anti-virus software are you using? If it's scanning inbound mail it
could be interfering.

Try enabling diagnostic logging to find out what's happening between the
server and Outlook. See this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240347

No virus found in this incoming message.
Checked by AVG - www.avg.com
Version: 8.5.437 / Virus Database: 271.1.1/2833 - Release Date: 04/24/10 18:31:00

Also Spybot, Sunbelt PF, Adaware. But I've had AVG checking Email for years.
Current problem started in last 2 weeks.

Thx,
P

Sigh. As has been pointed out numerious times, things can change in a
hearbeat and the AVG can begin to cause problems. Especially since the AV
updates itself continuously.

There's only one way to find out. Uninstall AVG (you're using an outdated
version, BTW. It's at 9, now). Reboot, and custom reinstall WITHOUT the
email module.

You're already protected with the resident scanner. The email scanning is
marketing hype.

Thanks. Can you make anything of the following?

Microsoft Internet Messaging API 6.00.2800.1983
POP3 Log started at 05/05/2010 14:16:47
POP3: 14:16:47 [db] Connecting to 'pop.att.yahoo.com' on port 995.
POP3: 14:16:48 [db] srv_name = "pop.att.yahoo.com" srv_addr = 68.142.206.218
POP3: 14:16:48 [db] Negotiating secure connection with 'Microsoft Unified Security
Protocol Provider'.
POP3: 14:16:48 [rx] +OK hello from popgate 2.45.2 on pop206.sbc.mail.mud.yahoo.com
POP3: 14:16:48 [tx] USER
POP3: 14:16:48 [rx] +OK password required.
POP3: 14:16:48 [tx] PASS ********
POP3: 14:16:49 [rx] +OK maildrop ready, 25 messages (843534 octets) (1630182275)
POP3: 14:16:49 [tx] STAT
POP3: 14:16:49 [rx] +OK 25 843534
POP3: 14:16:50 [tx] RETR 1
POP3: 14:16:53 [rx] -ERR [SYS/TEMP] Server network problem. Please try again after
sometime.
POP3: 14:16:53 [db] Connection to '' closed.
POP3: 14:16:53 [db] ERROR: "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.
Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity.", hr=2148322319

Evidently, it logs me on, finds 25 messages waiting, then draws the error when
it tries to retrieve the 1st message.

I called ATT "tech support", they verified my O2k settings, etc, then shuffled
me off to billable "support", which I declined.

I make the -ERR [SYS/TEMP] as a server error. Do you concur?

Thanks,
P
