I don't understand the difference between the 'shared contacts' in my address
book and the contacts I see under each identity. What I do know is that sometimes when I add a new contact to my address book, it goes into my 'shared contacts' and other times it goes into the contacts under my identity. It appears to be a function of how I add the name. However, I don't understand the advantage to having these two lists. In fact, when I'm trying to find someone's email address, the *only* way to find them, if they are in my 'shared contacts' is to use the 'find people' on the address book toolbar. If I simply type the name in the window that is labeled 'type name or select from list', the person doesn't show up. Why do I need these two lists? Is there any way to merge them? If have tried reading some of the technical information posted in links in this newsgroup about address books (specifically http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm#wabexe) but I do not understand it! |

How many identities do you have?
If only one, then it doesn't make a lot of difference. If you have several identities, then each one has a private section visible only to that identity. All identities can use the shared contacts section. So if you have contacts that you want available to all identities, you put it in the shared contacts, and if you want the contact private, you put it just in that identity. You can drag contacts between the shared contacts and the current identity in either direction. The address book tends to default to the current identity. So that if you use the option to add sender to the address book, it puts it in the identity section. It you start a new message and click the TO icon to open the address book to select a recipient, you'll find the default set to the current identity rather than shared contacts. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Mary Ann B." wrote in message ... I use mainly two different identities but the contacts have almost no
overlap, so I prefer to keep 99% of my contacts in the identity. Thanks for the idea of dragging the email addresses - I never knew you could do that. And I never knew I could click on the 'to' icon in a new email message to get my list of contacts. Brilliant! I find that if I enter a new contact in the 'to' section of an email and then add the email address through the 'new contact' selection once I try and send the email (because OE can't find a match for this new name), it adds the email to the shared contacts rather than the identity contacts. Is there a way to change that? "Michael Santovec" wrote: How many identities do you have? If only one, then it doesn't make a lot of difference. Where do you go to add the new contact? My experience is that the new
contact gets added to the identity and not shared contacts. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Mary Ann B." wrote in message ...
