Used it before I went to work on 4/9, came home that afternoon and started
getting the dreaded message: Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop3.live.com', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F. Usually fixes itself within a short time period. Now 4/12, Still can't send. I can receive through OE6, I can go to the internet site and send/receive, but that's such a pain and inconvenient. Called MSN tech support. Their solution was to "reconfigure my OE6, but you'll probably lose all your e-mail.." (Not at 9 pm!) Verified all settings in OE6 were correct. Even tried sending from Outlook (Windows XP Pro w/Office), no joy. No new programs were installed; there was a Windows security update installed, but I uninstalled it, rebooted, and still no joy. Turned off outgoing virus scan, no change. Searched on the error message and it brought me here. I am an MSN subscriber. Any suggestions other than to switch ISPs? Is there a problem on their end that they won't admit to? Thanks!-- Sue |

Since you have the same problem with Outlook, it isn't an issue with OE and
probably is an MSN issue. They wouldn't admit to it any more than most ISPs. See if your settings are as follows: 1. On the Servers Tab, a. Change the Incoming mail (POP3) and Outgoing mail (SMTP) settings to: i. Incoming mail FROM pop3.email.msn.com TO pop3.live.com ii. Outgoing mail FROM smtp.email.msn.com TO smtp.live.com b. Uncheck the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" box c. Ensure your full e-mail address is included under "Account Name" e.g. 2. On the Advanced Tab, a. Change the port number for Incoming Mail (POP3) from 110 to 995 b. Check both the boxes that indicates "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" Next: Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 Note that for some AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the program and reinstall in Custom Mode and opt out of e-mail scanning when the option arises. Finally, have a look here. It could be a few things. Possibly just unplugging your modem and plugging it back in may help. Same for a router if you use one. This will reset them. How to troubleshoot error messages that you receive when try to send and receive e-mail in Outlook and in Outlook Express: http://support.microsoft.com/default...14&Product=oex If none of the above help, my bucks are on MSN. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Sue" wrote in message ... Thanks, Bruce, for confirming I'm not nuts...well, at least where this is
concerned. I'll recheck my settings just to be sure in my own mind, and I've turned off the AV outgoing scan permanently. Still no go. Modem is internal, but I think you mean to unplug/plug the phone line into the back of the 'puter. (I'm on dial-up.) I've looked at so many of MSN's troubleshooting messages, I'm not sure what I've read. I'll check out the one you've referenced. I know from past experience that its useless to contact MSN support. Guess I just needed to raise my blood pressure about 30 points for some reason! All my account setting are correct on both my XP laptop and 98se PC and have been working just fine for a long time. Nothing has changed on either computer except I can't connect to my smpt.live server at MSN. Still can receive, just can't send. MSN will never admit to having a problem on their end but this problem has gone away in the past after a few days. I don't think anyone works at MSN over the weekend! I know it's a PITA but just hang in there. Don |

Thanks, Don. I do have a temporary fix. I had written through the support,
they sent the standard BS, and I wrote back as nicely as I could (well, not really, but I was civil), that what they told me was garbage and I wanted an answer now. Below is what they sent and it does work. I did write back and ask them to explain how my pop3/smtp MSN account went to a strictly HTTP server/Hotmail account between the hrs of 9am and 2 pm while I was at work. Like you, I've experienced it in the past, but it's normally fixed within 24 hrs. It just ticks me off that they keep blaming it on something we do, when clearly it's not our fault. If I could've reached through the phone lines last night....well, let's just say I was really, really ticked. Anyways, this works and is a temp fix for now: For Outlook Express 6.0 1. On the "Tools" menu, click "Accounts." 2. Click "Add," and then click "Mail." 3. Next to "Display name," type the name that you want to appear in the "From" field of outgoing messages, and then click "Next." 4. Next to "E-mail address," type your Hotmail e-mail address, and then click "Next." 5. Next to "My incoming mail server is a," click "HTTP." 6. Next to "My HTTP mail service provider is," click "Hotmail," and then click "Next." 7. Next to "Account name," type your Hotmail e-mail address. 8. Next to "Password," type your Hotmail password, and then click "Next." 9. Click "Finish," and then click "Close." I did not delete the MSN profile I have in there, I just made the new one the default. For now, it's better than having to got to the Hotmail site to answer mail. Thanks, All, for your support. If I hear anything else, I'll let you know! ---- Sue "Don/Gen" wrote: Sue, It won't help but I am in the same boat and it has happened before. It provides no protection not provided by the regular resident protection. Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. Thanks for your thoughts, Frank. Email outgoing scanning is always turned
off. This seems to happen a few times a year, usually not being able to send or received, but it's normally fixed at their end within 24 hrs or less. I was concerned because it's now been three days, and wanted to make sure nothing in my system was corrupt. I have had some of the Windows Updates cause problems in the past and had to uninstall them. Before I posted anything to anyone, I did all the normal stuff. When my system came back clean, that's when I posted. I've used Norton (anti-virus only, not the super-duper programs they have - those are a pain) for years with my OE and never had a problem. MacAfee is used at work with Outlook and no problems there either. Maybe I've just been lucky! It'll probably be fixed on Monday when their normal staff returns. Thanks again! -- Sue "Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM" wrote: "Sue" wrote in message ... Sue,
Thanks for the below information. I can use Hotmail to send for now but prefer, like you, using OE. Your MSN and Hotmail email address and password are the same, correct? Yes, use the same email address and password for Hotmail that you use for MSN.
Don't delete the MSN account you already have in your Outlook accounts. When and if it ever comes up again, you can switch back to make that one the default. Also, when you now send from Outlook, you'll see the "From" when composing a new message. With both accounts in the system, you now have to choose which you're sending from. Make sure you choose the address with Hotmail after it. Hope that makes sense, I've had a little too much coffee this morning! Looks like we're not the only ones having this problem! I see where more are posting about. -- Sue Ohio "Don/Gen" wrote: Sue, Thanks for the below information. I can use Hotmail to send for now but prefer, like you, using OE. Sue,
As predicted, it took a full day following the weekend for the M$N folks down on the smpt sever farm to collectively extract their heads from their nether regions, wipe the BS out of their eyes and throw the proper switch to once again, without ever admitting there was any problem on their end, allow us legacy users to once again send out our emails! It's time for a new ISP, I've been with them since 1999 and this is getting old. Don "Sue" wrote in message ... Thanks for your thoughts, Frank. Email outgoing scanning is always turned off.
