Default deleting messages too quickly purges them

I found that deleting messages in my in-box or sent-folder too quickly
permanently purges them, rather than sending them to my delete folder as
expected. It is like a default is set to do this if OE6 thinks that I have
double clicked on delete. Is there any setting I can change to avoid this
from happening? OS is XP Pro SP2. Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by too quickly, but my guess is that Deleted
Items needs to be emptied. You should also move any messages you want to
save out of the Inbox and Sent Items to a local folder you create, and then
compact your folders.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

If you hold down the Shift key while deleting messages, then they bypass
the Deleted Items folder, just as doing that while deleting files
bypasses the Recycle bin.

If you aren't intentionally holding down the shift key, you might have
sticky keys enabled (Control Panel, Accessibility) or a defective
keyboard.

If that's not the case, then see Bruce's reply.
