Just got a new computer with XP Media Center. Did a transfer of programs and
files from old computer (XP Home Edition) last night using AlohaBob PC Relocator. All seemed to go well, but Outlook Express on new computer does not have old email, folders or address book. Attempted to re transfer these files but AlohaBob says it's already done and won't let me redo it. Did a search for .dbx in hidden files on the new computer and found them, but they are in a different file than shown in the "Store Folder" path in OE. (It's the same path, except that the long string of numbers/letters is different and matches the path on the old computer). I presume that is why they don't show up. I thought I could fix it by changing the path to match the one where they are stored, but the application only lets me browse and click on my desired location which prevents me from designating a hidden file. Does anyone have any suggestions? Preferred solution would be to get the path pointing to where the files are or files where the path is. I thought I might also be able to export the email and address book from the old computer and import to the new, but I can't seem to get this to work either. How frustrating! -- Mary Ann |

Try importing the messages from the "other" message store folder
(File/Import/Messages, selecting OE6 and From a Message Store, pointing to the "other" store folder) and see if that works. The long string of numbers relates to a different Identity on your old computer and the new computer is most likely using the default "Main Identity" with a different GUID (the correct name for the long string of letters/numbers). -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Thanks Jim, with your help I'm halfway there. I ended up sending all of the
email folders to My Documents f irst and importing from there. Couldn't make it work the other way. But this ended up working fine. I now have all my email. I'm still struggling with getting the addressbook. I did a search on .wab on the new computer and ended up with a listing of 4 files and wasn't sure what was what. I exported to a comma delimited text file from the old computer to a CD and tried to import from that CD to the new computer. I get an import error. Msg doesn't give me any more information than that so I'm not sure what the problem is. I'll try again to import from the files I found when I did the .wab search on the new computer. Maybe one of them will work. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. I'll let you know what I come up with. Copy all of the WAB files from your CD to a folder on your Desktop. Then
open that folder, right click all the WAB files and make sure the "Read-Only" attribute set when a file is copied to a CD is cleared. Then double click each wab file in turn until you find the one with the contacts you are looking for. Then open your existing Address Book (Start/Run/All Programs/Accessories/Address Book) and use the Address Book menu to import from the older WAB file. Should work. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. OK, I think I'm hitting a brick wall. I have tried to export the file from
the old computer (text, comma delimited) to a CD and import from there. I get imput error. I also tried to import from the files I found on the new computer. Couldn't import directly because they are in a hidden file, but did send/copy to the CD and tried to impor there, but still an import error. I'm surprised I'm having so much trouble with the Address Book. I had the impression it would be the easier problem to solve. Jim or Others, do you have any other suggestions regarding the address book? -- Mary Ann "Mary Ann" wrote: Thanks Jim, with your help I'm halfway there. You are not by any chance the same Mary Ann that started a post on 9/24 in
Outlook Express General newsgroup about printing groups by any chance? If you are, you have a problem with your Address Book for starters, and also, Groups do not Import or Export without a little trickery that Jim can help you with, but not if the AB has more severe problems. If this is not the same Mary Ann, disregard this reply. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Mary Ann" wrote in message ... OK, I think I'm hitting a brick wall. Fortunately, I'm not the same Mary Ann. If I were, I guess I would be even
more frustrated. Good news, I now have both old email and my address book. Undoing the read only attribute was a very important clue! I couldn't move it to the desktop (I don't know why). I tried putting it in My Documents and importing from there, no success. Finally I put it in Doc and Settings\User Name\My Documents and it worked. I guess this is different from My Documents, but I don't know why. Jim, thanks so much. What a relief! I'm really not that familiar with "Aloha Bob" and its backup process so I
really can't be sure what the problem may be. But if you go to the website they have for help: http://www.alohabob.com/help/ you may well find the answers you need.
