Default Outlook Express POP3 delay in "seeing" messages

Hello,

My Outlook Express works fine, but there is a noticable delay (about 4
minutes) in Outlook Express "seeing" messages on my Network Solutions POP3
server. Logging in via web mail, I can see messages in my inbox that have
already arrived and I can read them, but when I try to download them via
Outlook Express, Outlook Express doesn't see them at all. The POP3.log file
shows OE logging in correctly and doing stat command with no mail being
shown, so it doesn't download anything at this point, even though there is
mail sitting on the POP3 server. I get no log in errors and the pop3.log file
is clean. Only after a few minutes (about 4 to 8min), does OE see the actual
mail on the POP3 server and then downloads it.

This behavior started about 2 weeks ago. Has anyone seen this behavior?

The issue is on the server. The Web mail accesses the mail differently
than via POP3 access. So it's possible for it to see things differently
than OE can.

The POP3 log reports what OE sees. It asks the POP3 server if there is
any mail and the server says no. Nothing OE can do about that.

You'll need to talk to Network Solutions as to why there is a delay for
POP3 access.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
