How to backup and restore recurring outlook calendar events?

How wacky that Microsoft Outlook has to make it pain to backup one's calendar. I suspect it's a case of vendor lock-in, and a lack of real concrete CSV standard for defining recurring items and exceptions since this really requires iCal/vCal or something similarly more complex then CSV. However, where there is a will there is a work-around.
