Default E-mail address not in Address Book after iPhone sync

When I add a (or modify an existing) photo to an existing 3G iPhone Contact
and the iPhone is synced to Outlook 2003, the Outlook Contacts data is
updated; however, the E-mail address is deleted from the Outlook address
Book. If I cut and paste the E-mail address in the Contacts record, it
reappears in the Address Book and stays OK when the iPhone is synced again.

Any ideas what is happening?

Default E-mail address not in Address Book after iPhone sync

There are wide reports that Apple's sync software is defective. This is not
an Outlook issue. Take it up with Apple.

The Outlook Contacts data is updated, so I don't understand why it's an Apple
problem. The problem seems to be that the Contacts updates as far as E-mail
addresses don't make it to the Address Book. Maybe, I don't understand how
Outlook handles updates to contacts. Also, I thought it was just iPhone
photo changes that caused the problem. it's any change and even adding a new
contact to the iPhone.

What I don't understand is why a E-mail address cut and paste in Outlook
Contacts solves the problem

The sync software is not creating valid, resolved email addresses. That's
why they don't appear in the address book view. Outlook does not participate
in this process.
