when i add new contacts, then no longer show up in the "auto fill" drop down
list as I am typing in addresses. All my other contacts are listed, but not
new ones.

That's because the autocompletion drop-down is not related to your contacts
in any way. It doesn't get populated with an address until you send a
message to that address.

You are mistaken. The autocompletion cache has nothing to do with your
Contacts. It is a list of previous recipients, not Contacts.
