Maybe we just need instant
communication more easily, so we notice it more often, and since
she's in carpool, the word "pick up" is sometimes in the email.

That's hard to say. If you have an application filtering mail, disable it
and see if that helps. Otherwise, she can generate whatever logs her mail
client can produce and examine them for any problems.
