I have Outlook 2002.

I have just had a "start of the year cleanout" of my outlook files,
archiving emails, tasks and contacts etc.

I now seem to have two contacts lists - one which is accessed from the
contacts folder or outlook toolbar, and one which as accessed from the From,
To, CC, BCC buttons when composing an email.

I would appreciate some help in reducing this so both methods point to the
same address list.

You'll need to provide at least some information. A "start of the year
cleanout" tell us nothing about what you did. Nor are Contacts ever archived
unless you did so manually (in which case you most likely created another
Contacts Folder).
There is no address book in Outlook. The address book is merely a view of
your Contacts Folders. It is not possible to display Contacts in your
address book that do not also exist in one of your Contacts Folders. Use
Folder List view to see how many Contacts Folders you now have. That might
give you a clue as to what's going on.

I combined emails from a couple of pst files that I accumulated on laptops,
old PC's etc, renamed the combined folder as my Archive 2005, and started a
new outlook pst file.

I now have
- names in my contacts folder, which I can acccess and send mail to as you
would expect
- no names in the "Select Names" dialogue when I click the To button from a
new email.

From the further reading that I have done, it appears that the contacts
folder has fallen out of my address book.

Seems to me you just neglected to place your new Contacts Folder into your
Address Book view. Did you enable it as an email address book? Go to Tools
E-mail accounts View or change existing directories or address books
Outlook Address Book Change.Do you see your new Contacts Folder listed
there?
