Default Why doesn't "Update Now" make changes in some distribution lists?

For some time now I've noticed that when I make changes to email addresses in
my contacts and then click "Update Now" in my distribution lists, in some
lists the changes are made and in others they're not; I have to manually
delete the old one and re-enter the new one. I can't figure out why the
"Update Now" feature isn't working in some of them; I couldn't find any
settings that control such features. If anyone knows how to fix this, please
advise.
