Default last name first in the "To" button

Same question, different version of Outlook. The solutions posted for
earlier versions do not work in 2007. [Why can't they just fix it for good?]
Anyhow, I have my contacts organized by last name first, but when I press
the "To" button in emails, it comes up first name first and I can't figure
out how to get it back right. Can you please help?

Solution also works for Outlook 2007 when done correctly.

Thanks - I think. Since I followed the directions exactly as I read them and
as it worked for the Contacts file but not for the "To" file, and as I had
the same problem 3 years ago when I installed Outlook 2003 but don't remember
the solution, would you please educate me and let me know what I need to do
to do it "correctly"? Thank you.

I went through the steps exactly as they were written (except that some of
the fields were different):
Tools
Account Settings
Address Books (there was only one)
Change
File as (Smith, John)

I closed it, closed Outlook, went back in, confirmed that the change had
been kept (it had), then tried to send an email and the "To" button - still -
has first name and then last.

So, I have followed your instructions exactly and it still does not work.
What to do now (unless you respond quickly, I will be off line for the next 3
days)

You're the one who failed to quote the post that contains the instructions.
They are and remain:
Go to Tools E-mail accounts View or change existing directories or
address books Outlook Address Book Change… Set your sort order there
Works for everyone else in Outlook 2007.
