Default Contact Phone Number Auto Format

I have Windows XP Pro running Outlook 2007. When I create a contact and type in the phone number, Outlook used to automatically format the number (123) 456-7890. This doesn't happen any longer. If you enter 1234567890 in the phone number field the number keeps its original formatting, as 1234567890. I checked modem settings, dialing properties, area code, location etc. Nothing has helped, any suggestions?
