Default Cannot Reply Unless Established Contact

My operating system is Windows XP Professional and my Microsoft Office
version is 2003.
I am unable to reply to e-mail messages unless the sender and his e-mail
address is already in my Contacts folder. If I send a reply, I receive the
message back from System Administrator stating "Your message did not reach
some or all of the intended recipients. The following recipient(s) could not
be reached: 'bob smith' on 3/31/2006 8:30 AM 554 :Relay
access denied".
If I receive a message from someone who isn't already set up, I have to add
him to my Contacts and then I can send a message back to him.
I assume this may have something to do with my security settings.
I would apreciate any help or suggestions.
Thanks.

This is usually because you are not properly authenticating to the outgoing
server.

Brian,

Can you give me any suggestions on how to correct the authenticating problem?

Brian,

I just found in the Internet E-mail Settings - Outgoing Server tab, that the
My outgoing server requries authentication box was checked. Maybe that's the
problem. It that doesn't solve the problem, I'll let you know.

Thanks for your help.

Usually that option is supposed to be checked.
