Default Outlook 2002 Recovery and Vista

I understand that Outlook 2002 is incompatible with Vista. My old computer
(Dell 4600) failed and I have mounted my old hard drive in an external USB
enclosure and connected it to my new computer Dell "XPS" 420 running
Microsoft Vista Ultimate.
If I purchase Outlook 2007 and place it on my new system is there a
possibillity that I can transfer my old Outlook 2002 .pst files, from my
externally mounted hard drive, to my new Outlook 2007 program and it will
recognize the old data - at least to recover the old contact listing?
Thanks, in advance, for any advice provided to a new Vista user.

Ray19,
1. Create a folder in your "My Documents" folder on your "XPS 420" PC. Or if
like me, you created a separate DATA drive/partition, create the folder in
that partition, and name it something like "Old Outlook files".
2. From you XPS 420 machine start a search on the drives in the enclosure
for *.PST files. Making sure that you select to search for hidden files.
3. Then copy/paste each *.PST file one by one, into the folder that you
created in Step#1, giving a unique name to each of them, such as:
oldoutlook1.pst
oldoutlook2.pst
oldoutlook3.pst
etc...
4. Open Outlook2003 (Outlook2007 should be similar FILE Open Outlook Data
File Browse to the folder that you created in Step#1 Select one *.PST
file. And a new set of personal folders should appear in Outlook's folder
tree.
a. Now you can drag or copy/paste (which I recommend to do, to keep the
*.PST files intact.), the contents from the old personal folder to your main
personal folder and its sub folders. Or just leave it separate.
b. repeat step #4 for each old *.PST file that you saved.
5. If you choose to not leave the old personal folders in the Outlook folder
tree. Then just right click the folder, and select to "Close" the folders.

You and I are already dealing with all of these issues in the original
thread.

Do you intend to leave the old hard drive attached to the new PC? If so,
why not just use the old PST right where it is on the old hard drive?

Brian,
I hadn't though of that! I guess I could leave the .pst files on the
attached external hard drive where they reside and direct my Outlook program
to them -- right?\

However, you indicated that Outlook 2002 and Vista were somewhat
incompatible and I want to use Outlook as my e-mail program without having to
deal with any unwanted difficulites; so, I'm considering upgrading my Office
Suite to 2007 or something above 2002. The only reason I would do this is to
get Outlook working. I am very comfortable with all the other programs of
Office 2002 that I use. I like Outlook so much that I would consider the
additional investment if I knew it would be worthwhile and I would have a
trouble free version of Outlook that used word as its editor and operated
with my Vista system. What do you think?

I have an Outlook 2003 program which I have never loaded in any of my
computers mainly becasue, as I understand, in order to use Word as my e-mail
editor, which I really like, I need Word 2003 (I purchased the program before
I knew this!) which I don't have. I only have Office Professional 2002.
So my dilemma is, how can I retrieve my Outlook 2002 files (especially my
contact listing) from my external hard drive, and be able to use Outlook with
my computer Vista Ultimate system?

I apologize for starting a new thread. I didn't understand that you would
continue with me. That won't happen again. Thanks for staying with me as I
suffer througvh the throes of going to a new computer, from a computer that
just died (Dell 4600), and a new unfamiliar operating system.

Correct.

You may be most comfortable in finding a license and install kit for Office
2003 from eBay or Froogle. It's less of a learning curve and quite a bit
cheaper than a new Office 2007 license.

I have an Outlook 2003 program which I have never loaded in any of my
computers mainly becasue, as I understand, in order to use Word as my
e-mail editor, which I really like, I need Word 2003 (I purchased the
program before I knew this!) which I don't have. I only have Office
Professional 2002.

You are correct that if you wish to use Word as your mail editor (something
I'd never choose to do, by the way, because it's too much overhead to suit
me), you'll need to have all Office apps at the same version.

So my dilemma is, how can I retrieve my Outlook 2002 files
(especially my contact listing) from my external hard drive, and be
able to use Outlook with my computer Vista Ultimate system?

No matter which Office you finally choose, you should be able to make use of
your old data.

I've got a Dimension 4600 as well and I like it a lot. I've upgraded it
several times since I bought it and the 2.0 GHz processor is still fast
enough for everything I need to do, including running Vista Ultimate.
