Default PST File Location

currently running outlook 2002. I have a desktop and a laptop on my home
network. I would like to be able to occasionally use the laptop for email.
How can I keep the PST file on my desktop and access it from the laptop. I've
shared the file and can access it from the laptop but outlook doesn't seem to
like it. WHat I have been able to find implies the PST file must be on the
local machine. IF it's not possible with 2002 would this work with a newer
version?
