Default outlook express works fine but outlook 2003 doesn't

Outlook 2003 will not send or recieve email and instead offeres a bunch of
errors saying that it cannot connect to the server for either email account
or indicates that my ports and all or not set properly but Outlook Express 6
will work just fine with all the same settings. I have already used Outlook
2003 and it worked fine then it stopped, I updated my router and it worked.
It has stopped working again and I have already updated the router again and
it's starting to get under my skin a whole lot. Any suggestions.

Sounds like you have an issue with your router that somehow doesn't affect
OE.

That was the first problem, where were you 2 weeks ago. I just figured it
out about 20 minutes ago, it's the Norton Internet Security personal
firewall. You have to configure it under program controls to give full
permissions to Outlook. Thanks for your input anyways. I'm just happy I
couldn't send that angry email I wrote to the router company.

Bruce / Brian,
I have just suffered the same troublesome problem that you describe....
Outlook 2003 which had been working fine for 10 months suddently refused to
work, generating error messages on send and receive. Like you I was forced to
fall back on Outlook Express in order to communicate.
I found an obscure little program
"C:\Program Files\Windows Messaging\SCANPST.EXE"
Running this from the start menu, it scans the Outlook.pst data file and
then repairs it and saves a back up.
I conclude that my .pst file had become corrupted in some way - probably
through opening and closing Outlook as on several occasions I was shown a
message to say that Outlook had not closed down properly and would restart in
'safe mode'.
Having run this repair program I find that I can send and receive as normal.
However, I have not yet been able to work out how to salvage all of my
emails and contacts from th backup (.bak file).
If faced with the probelm again I would save all of my imprtant contacts
..csv files and emails to disk, so they can be imported.
Maybe someone can suggest a neat way to revover this info?
Anyway, at least Outlook 2003 is now working again
