In message "Diane Poremsky
[MVP]" was claimed to have wrote: Gmail doesn't push to outlook. Outlook goes to gmail and collects the mail. The phone and desktop should be within 5 minutes of 'sync' - outlook should not be set to collect mail any more frequently than 5 - 8 minutes. This really isn't true. Gmail supports IMAP IDLE, which allows the server to push notifications to connected clients without the client constantly polling. However, Google doesn't push all changes via IDLE, only new messages, so in practice you still need to poll to get updated folder views if you use more than one mail client on a regular basis. The above having been said, Outlook's IMAP IDLE support isn't fantastic, Outlook doesn't always notice and reestablish the connection in the event of a timeout, so it's not quite as good an experience as other IMAP IDLE capable clients. |
