Default Automatic Message Download Setting

Is there a security risk to automatically download messages when previewing?

Is there a difference in security to view a message in the lower screen when
previewing versus the result from double clicking the preview and opening the
message in a full screen?

No.

The preview is actually just a tad more secure than opening the message in its own window in Outlook 2003.

That depends on your version of Outlook and the patch level applied, neither
of which you stated.
