Default READ BEFORE INSTALLING OFFICE 2007 B2TR

D**n, I didn't see your post until AFTER I installed B2TR. I've been using
Office 2007 beta 2 for 3+ months, all my Word docs are in B2's .docx format,
and losing them is not acceptable. (An aggressive, itchy pox upon the Word
team for putting us in this situation.)

It sounds like I need to completely uninstall Office 2007, reinstall Office
2007 B2 (and NOT the TR), open each .docx file and Save As .doc. Is that
correct?

Thanks!

The B2TR patch has some nasty surprises for users in store. The most
important one being that Word 2007 Beta 2 files saved in the new file
formats (extensions docx, docm, etc) might not open at all once B2TR has
been installed.

Did you ever bother to read all the warnings about not running this in
production?

And yes, that is indeed the way to recover the items that have issues.

That Microsoft arrogance must rubbing off on MVPs now :-) These aren't
video games, they're "productivity tools". No one is going to install the
beta and then spend their time creating worthless documents that they don't
mind losing. They're going to use the beta as they would the RTM version,
and see how it stacks up against the previous release.

In 10 years of running all the Windows and Office betas, much of that time
while working at Microsoft, I can't recall another instance where between
Beta 2 and RC1 you lost the ability to open beta-created documents.

The user experience in previous product cycles has gotten BETTER as products
approached RTM, and I've always looked forward to the RTM version. But
that's not my experience with Office 2007 B2TR, which for me is definitely a
step backwards. B2TR is slower, has more UI hangs, and uses twice the memory
of B2. Outlook and Word, which in my book are the core of Office, are NOT
ready to be labeled release candidates.

It's not arrogance. It's common sense. There are warnings that state that
betas are not recommended for production systems. If someone chooses to push
their luck, they should be willing to accept any consequences.

Do you have problems opening Word docs files? You only need to do the
steps you outlined if you are having any problems.
