Default Which version of Microsoft Office

I've just bought a PC with Windows XP. I need to upgrade Microsoft Office (I
had Office '97). Can anyone confirm that to have a version that will run and
send/receive emails I'll need Office 2003? Can't get a straight answer from
the shop I go to and I don't want to make a mistake.

Cheers.

Peter

Office 97 will run on Windows XP so you don't /need/ to upgrade. If however
you don't have Office 97 any more, then unless you /absolutely/ /need/ Excel
and Word and the calendar functions in Outlook , there is no need to buy any
upgraded MS Office product at all. There are plenty of free alternatives
which will work just as well for the home user.
Outllook Express, Eudora and Mozilla Thunderbird (the latter of which has a
calendar you can install) for free email clients, and Open Offive if you
need a free Office suite that is similar in function to MS Office 2002.
