I have a problem with Outlook 20000
If I receive a message from someone who has asked for a confirmation of receipt and I then click on OK, the confirmation is not sent and a message says that it rejected me as the sender. Response 501, syntax error in argument. However if I type a reply and send it on the same account, all is OK. I am sure I am overlooking something simple, but can't think what! The SMTP address is definitely correct. Any help much appreciated. Geoff |

Post the complete error text (but masking any real mail addresses). -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |

The message could not be sent because it rejected you as the sender. Server Response: 501 Syntax error in arguments'. (Account: 'xxxxxx', SMTP Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Error number: 0x800ccc78). Where xxxxxx is my email address. As I said before, I can send emails in the normal way on this account so it is only if I respond to a request for confirmation. Geoff. |

It's probably because the RR is returned without a valid From field and in
an effort to stop spam, the server is rejecting mail that does not have a valid From field. If you aren't authenticating with the outgoing server, it might help (because it accepts all mail from validated senders), otherwise I don't think you'll be able to return RR. FWIW, RR are often dropped as spam for this reason. -- Diane Poremsky [MVP - Outlook] Outlook Tips: http://www.outlook-tips.net/ Outlook & Exchange Solutions Center: http://www.slipstick.com/ Outlook Tips by email: EMO - a weekly newsletter about Outlook and Exchange: New Poll: What type of email account is your main account? http://forums.slipstick.com/showthread.php?t=42402 "Geoff" wrote in message ... The message is from the BT Internet server. If this were to happen to me, I'd be on the phone to BT Internet. -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |
