I was doing a simple search in Outlook, it didn't find it in the Inbox, so I
told it to "Try searching in all mail items". After five minutes I gave up
but couldn't find any way to cancel the search. Not CTRL C, CTRL Break,
escape, clicking anywhere on the Outllok window, etc. I ending up killing
it in Task manager.

The x to the right of the search field should do it.

I wasn't able to click that, or anything else. I couldn't click the X, or
File, Exit, etc - the search was completing tying up the application which
is why I am asking this question here.

Did you try changing folders? That's the only other way I know of. It
sometimes takes a little time to make the switch - its not instant like it
is normally.

If nothing works, you need to 'crash' outlook- you can try right clicking on
the task bar button and choosing close or open task manager and end the
process (on the Processes tab).

I did crash it through task manager, but was hoping there was a more elegant
way of doing it, rather than possibly corrupting my mailbox, with some
combination of keystrokes or something. I was unable to select a folder as
you suggested.
