Default Outlook Express Completely Corrupted - Please Help

Hello,

I had Outlook Express 6.0 on Windows XP Home Edition with SP3 for the last
couple of years working perfectly fine.

Yesterday when I opened OE, my system froze for some reason and I did a
Ctrl-Alt-Del and closed the application OE from the Windows Task Manager.

Then I rebooted the System and opened OE and the whole OE got corrupted.

Here are the problems.

I had about 5 News Server Accounts with different subscribed newsgroups with
current downloads.

1) A couple of news server accounts lets say N1 and N2 were "automatically"
(reverted back) reset back to posts dated 12/8/2008 even though they were
"current" yesterday.

2) For N1 and N2 accounts, when I right click on the server names in the
(left) Folders window, I get NOTHING when I am supposed to get the MENU with
"Properties" and other options "Open", "Find",.......etc

3) When I highlight N1 or N2 server accounts in the folders window, the
TOOLBAR automatically changes to "Create Mail", "Send/Recv", "Addresses" and
"Find" options when it is supposed to be ""New Post", "Reply Group", 'Reply"
"Forward"......etc options

4) Is there anyway I can restore OE back to the way it was the day before
yesterday with all the News Server accounts working AND the posts "current"

5) If I reinstall OE 6.0 from the Windows XP CD, would I get back all the
original functionality WITHOUT disturbing all the downloaded posts in all
the News Server accounts. By the way I use a couple of News Service
Providers for my 5 News Server accounts and N1 and N2 are from different
News Service Providers. So the OE problem has nothing to do with the News
Service Providers.

Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

A4. I'd doubt it.

A5. Reinstalling OE (which would require doing a Repair Install of WinXP)
will not fix this.

From your post, it's pretty clear that your current Identity is damaged,
especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your Mail
and News accounts in a new Named Identity...

File | Identities | Add new identity

Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity
(IMPORTANT!), (2) import messages from the old identity into the new one,
and then (3) delete the old one (File | Identities | Manage Identities).
Don't even bother with attempting to import the newsgroup data.

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:

Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email

= OT: Your headers (Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512) tell us that
your WinXP SP3 computer is NOT fully patched at Windows Update! Take care
of this ASAP, please.

And, just in case it does...

Make a proper backup at least daily to a separate hard disc drive,
preferably a remote one for max security (which applies to backups of all
other data as well, f course).

Thanks for your response. I somehow managed to get OE working as before with
a couple of exceptions.

Now OE is not letting me post to more than one newsgroup.

I used to post to three or four newsgroups simultaneously by separating the
newsgroup names with commas in the Newsgroups field.

Any idea how to fix this problem ?

TIA

No, I did not.

I am using the old Identities.

When I post, I get these error message boxes in succession BUT strangely the
message IS getting posted on all the newsgroups I wanted.

1) The newsgroup abc.def.ghijk could not be resolved.

2) One or more newsgroup names could not be verified. Do you want to post
the message anyway ?

[Top-posting is the custom in this newsgroup, especially seeing as it's the
default in OE. Thank you.]

Have you replaced your original identity with a new one yet?

What happens when you try to send to multiple newsgroups? Post any error
messages in their entirety.

Are all of the newsgroups available on your default NNTP newsserver (which
appears to be TitanNews but which really only "hands off" your posts to a
series of other newsservers [1])?

PS: Your WinXP computer is NOT fully-patched! Check-in at Windows Update

Being the default is not the reason it is the custom. It is the default
because Microsoft has unilaterally tried to make it the custom. Just about
the only place in the whole of Usenet where it is the custom is the
Microsoft newsgroups.
