A friend has suddenly lost the ability send email. The OS is XP and OE6

The gist of the error message follows:
smtp.comcast,net propotcol:smtp, server response 554 ....port:587,secure
ssl: no,server error:554, error number:0x800ccc6f

Comcast has walked the user through the setup for email and it agrees with
my own setup.

System was rebooted with no change.

What now?

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and
causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes
and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V
program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Note that for some AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the program
and reinstall in Custom Mode and uncheck e-mail scanning when the option
arises.

I suggested she try running System Restore.
Problem solved.

Problem solved for a bit or maybe for an hour. System Restore actually will do
nothing for this issue which will keep on happening over again. Before it does
follow what Bruce posted for the fix
