Hello,
I have OE6, XP Pro SP2. I use OE to check several accounts; an HTTPMail (hotmail), and several POP (gmail, a couple of sbcglobal.net and one on a hosting providers servers). Today, everything began failing. The hotmail account says "Unable to connect to server." The POP accounts time out. This happens both during send and receive. I've tried using 3 different internet connections (LAN, DSL and dial up), and each fail. I have full connectivity, can view web sites and can successfully ping the POP and SMTP servers. This leads me to believe that something has gone globally wrong in OE, but I don't know where to look. If anyone has any suggestions or has seen this before, I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks, Mike |

Bruce,
Thanks. Here they are. I can still ping the pop and smtp servers, and have all the connectivity I've ever had. On the time-outs, when I got the message box asking if I wanted to wait or stop, I hit stop this time. Hitting wait on other tries hasn't yielded any results. If any of this gives you any ideas, please let me know. ============================= A TCP/IP error occurred while trying to connect to the server. Frank,
Thanks for the input. Email scanning is already disabled in my AV program, and I don't have any type of anti-spam program. It looks (at least to my untrained eye), that most of the errors are problems in finding the servers, not in communicating with them. The way it's acting is like it's offline. However, I know I have connectivity because I can view web pages and ping the mail servers. The only connectivity settings I could find say that OE shares a connection with IE, and if you hit configure, it takes you to the Internet Options/Connection dialog box, where everything looks fine. Is there a setting somewhere that I don't know about (or a registry entry) that could cause it not to see the connection? Thanks again. The timeout slider is already at its max, and I've tried clicking
"Wait" on the nag window to try even longer than the maximum time, to no avail. In this article, http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=k...d=2578&sid=216, it lists several things to try. Here have been the results: 1 - confirm settings are correct. Done, all settings are correct. Accounts have been deleted and reentered with no effect. 2 - examine firewall settings. Connection to servers fails through 3 different firewalls, and also with firewall on home network completely disabled. 3 - check anti-virus. AV scanning of emails is disabled. OE still fails when AV program is completely disabled. 4 - determine whether modem is functioning correctly. OE fails via 3 different connection types, and I can successfully ping the mailservers on all 3. 5 - verify MTU settings on router. Again, it fails on all 3 connection types. Changing MTU settings on router at home network had no effect. 6 - remove and reinstall OE. I'd love to try this, but the instructions for doing so don't match up with what I'm seeing when I try to follow them. I have XP Pro, SP2. The article links off to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263837/, How to manually remove and reinstall OE. The steps a Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional Follow these steps to remove Outlook Express in Windows XP Home Edition or in Windows XP Professional:1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double click Add or Remove Programs. 3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components. 4. Click to clear the Outlook Express check box, and then click OK. Outlook Express will be removed from the computer. To reinstall Outlook Express, use the same steps. However, in step 4, click to select the Outlook Express check box, and then click OK. Unfortunately, when you get to step 4, the checkbox doesn't actually remove OE. All it removes is the shortcut to OE in the start menu. (Trust me, I've tried it a couple of times. It does NOT remove OE.) 7 - create a new profile. Tried this at least 3 times. No effect. 8 - delete suspicious messages from your mailbox. There are no "suspicious" messages in any of my mail accounts and, since all 5 accounts began failing at exactly the same time, this is highly unlikely as a cause to begin with. 9 - verify that all SMTP addresses in a distribution list are correct. This will only effect sending email, not server connectivity. So...there's the comprehensive list of everything I've tried. An earlier the full text of the errors. So, my questions a 1-Anybody got any other ideas? Is there a registry entry or anything like that which could be at fault? 2-Is there a way to really uninstall OE6 in XPPro SP2 without reinstalling the entire operating system? Thanks again. Mike |
