Default OE6 not sending email

Using Windows XP Pro SP2 and updates with OE6.

Tried to reply to a friend's email and received an error message. "A TCP/IP
error occurred while trying to send data to the server. Subject ''
Account: 'Home', Server: smtp.(my ISP- my brackets) Protocol: SMTP, Port:
25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC13

Rang my ISP who said it was an OE problem (as I could still open web pages).
I restarted computer, OE6 and my internet connection and continued to get
the same error message. Interestingly I created a 'new identity'
(File|Identities) and was then able to re-create my reply and it sent!

My question is, what has gone wrong?

If you were still using the Main Identity, import your messages to the new
Identity and stop using the Main Identity.

Default OE6 not sending email

0x800CCC13 SOCKET WRITE ERROR - Unable to read Winsock

1.. This error sometimes appears when trying to download e-mails with an
attachment. Having software such as Netnanny installed can cause this to
happen. Disabling the software can resolve this error.

2.. Remove the TCP/IP protocol and reinstall it. In windows, go into
Network from the Control Panel. NOTE: You may need your Windows CD for this
task!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is not uncommon for an identity to become damaged, especially the
default Main Identity. Why did it happen? Could be many reasons and we
usually don't, or can't, figure out the exact culprit.
Thanks Bruce and Ron - I have just recently done an OE back up and will use
that to import into my 'new identity'.
Or perhaps I could un-install OE6 and re-install (having backed up
everything)?
Your thoughts on the best course of action? Thanks
You're welcome. Just open the new identity and import the messages from the
old identity.
For your messages:
In the old identity, compact all your folders first if you can. Not a
necessity.
In the new identity: File | Import | Messages. Select Microsoft Outlook
Express 6 and Import from the old identity.
For your Address Book:
Open the Address Book in the old identity and File | Export | Address Book
(wab) to any place on your HDD that is easy for you. My Documents is fine.
Then, open the Address Book in the new identity and File | Import | Address
Book (wab) and point to where you saved it.
For Newsgroups:
In the old identity, Tools | Accounts | News | Export. Send it to anyplace
on your HDD and then in the new identity, go there and Import.
These will only set up your news accounts. The specific newsgroups will have
to be subscribed to again.
