Minutes!
Is my address book too big? If so, is there a *quick* way to delete old contacts? Perhaps a third-party tool to manage the contacts I have, and delete old ones.. If my address book isn't too big, why does a new email take minutes to autocomplete the addresses in the To: and Cc: fields? * Already compacted all .dbx files. * Already rebooted. * Already archived (manually) folders over 100k. What next? Thanks!! |

More info on the problem:
* Unchecked the annoying Messenger option. * Win2kPro and IE6 / OE6, each fully patched and updated, running on near antique hardware, PII 350. ![]() * I get a rather similar delay he Tools - Options - Compose. Yes, clicking the Compose tab caused a 2 minute machine hang. |

Performance Problems:
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/performance.htm General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often. You did all suggested? You ran a Scan Disk followed by Disk Defragmenter?
What is the size of Folders.dbx? If you have done what you say, try creating a new identity and see if the problem persists. You may have a damaged identity especially if it is the default Main Identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old identity and delete it. Did all but run Defragmenterm which will require an evening.
Folders.dbx is 89k, large but hasn't been problematic previously. I'll work on the identity test next. Thx. "Bruce Hagen" wrote: You did all suggested? 89KB for Folders.dbx is small. Not to worry about that.

I have read all posts in this thread as of this reply.
How many contacts are in your Address Book? ======================= 1. Delete Temporary Internet Files and accept the option to delete all offline content. 2. Run Disk Cleanup. 3. Run a Defrag session. ======================= If the behavior persists, Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage Identities). To avoid such corruption in futu - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Carolyn L Burke wrote: Minutes!
