Default HELP: recover/read lost Identity GUID from backed up folder

That's exactly what I've been doing.

"Michael Santovec" wrote in message
...
You need to do an IMPORT in the new identity.

Copy the backup to an empty folder on the hard drive (not the OE folder)

Then select to import from a Store folder (not identity) and then point to
the folder with the DBX files.

That method doesn't work if it's a different GUID after a reformat drive,
since a new GUID is now in the registry. When I do that it just doesn't
show all my folders.

"Ron Sommer" wrote in message

If you are only talking about one Identity, you don't need the GUID.
Put the dbx files from the backup in a folder on your computer.
Make sure the dbx files are not marked Read Only.
In OE, File, Import, Messages, OE6, Store folder directory. Browse to
the dbx files.

Default recover/read lost Identity GUID from backed up folder

Yes, my Store Folder (backup on another disk drive) contains the entire
folder set:

cleanup.log
Deleted Items.dbx
Drafts.dbx
Folders.dbx
Hotmail - Bulk Mail.dbx
Hotmail - Deleted Items.dbx
Hotmail - Inbox.dbx
Hotmail - sent Items.dbx
(several Hotmail custom folders.dbx)
Inbox.dbx
Offline.dbx
Outbox.dbx
Pop3uidl.dbx
Search Folder.dbx
Sent Items.dbx
(several newsgroups.dbx)

This is the folder I point to when Importing Outlook Express 6.0. But all it
finds is the Deleted, Drafts, Inbox, Outbox & Sent Items.

If you open the message store on the other drive, does it contain dbx

I backed up the message store C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Application
Data\Identities\{DA2A78D6-A40A-4022-81EC-558354E12674}\Outlook Express

to another hard drive in a folder called Outlook Express. Actually, for
the past year I been using it from this "other" drive (by changing the
STORE FOLDER).

I format Windows/PC and then I setup Outlook Express again without
changing the STORE FOLDER. I tried File | Import | Messages and pointed
to my "other" drive STORE FOLDER. No emails found. I tried copying to C:\
STORE FOLDER. Nothing happens.

Did you back up the message store with the dbx files in it? If you did,
where did you back it up to, and where is it now?

Default HELP: recover/read lost Identity GUID from backed up folder

Yes, Hotmail is setup again, and it starts downloading the Inbox by default.
I can change the downloading settings but obviously I want it to import my
existing DBX files.

I remember someone telling me I should have kept a note of the previous GUID
and then registry hack so that it accepts the old DBX files immediately...
without importing.. is that possible?

Hotmail folders don't import. They always synch with the server.

Ofcourse....

But there must be a way to read the GUID from the DBX Hotmail files?

Default recover/read lost Identity GUID from backed up folder

Please confirm that (1) you've copied all DBX files in the backup set,
including Folders.dbx, from the (external) drive to a folder on the HDD of
the partition running OE where you want to import the data and that (2)
you've pointed the import wizard to this folder.

Also please tell us the size of each of the following DBX files in the
backup set: Inbox.dbx; Sent Items.dbx; Deleted Items.dbx; and Folders.dbx.

But there must be a way to read the GUID from the DBX Hotmail files?

DBExtract (http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx) or DBXtend
(http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtend/Default.aspx) should be able to extract
messages from a Hotmail-specific DBX file.

There is a way to import a single Hotmail-specific DBX file into OE
(http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importdbx). However, if you import it
as a Hotmail-specific folder and the DBX file contains messages that are no
longer on the server, those messages will be deleted when OE first syncs
with the Hotmail server.

Default HELP: recover/read lost Identity GUID from backed up folder

Only local folders can be imported. HTTP (Hotmail/MSN) and IMAP are
mirrors of the server. They have to be synchronized when OE connects to
the mail server.

In you want to import the saved Hotmail DBX files as a local folder, you
can use the following procedure.

How to import a single mail folder (*.dbx)
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importdbx
For an alternate description, see the last paragraph he
