When I hit the red 'x' atop my OE express, nothing happens. The button is
depressed, but the targetd message(s) are not deleted. When I try to move messages to my deleted directory, they won't move and a pop-up box indiates cannot move, an error has occured. Since I get hundreds of emails daily, I alleciated this problem by creating a subdirectory within my inbox called deleted and move files into there. But of course, it isnt the official deleted directory and thus cannot be deleted. I can't seem to solve this on my own. Any ideas please? Thanx!! 16 |

If you have trouble deleting messages, Deleted Items is probably corrupt. If
you have any messages in this folder you want to keep, move them first and then do the following, including moving messages in other folders and then compact all folders. Deleted Items is probably corrupt. In the off chance that you are saving messages you want to save in Deleted Items, (a garbage pail), move them to a local folder you create and then do the following. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX file for Deleted Items and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often. Well, I couldn't believe my eyes when I pulled up this page...this is the
exact problem I am havingand it began about 13 Sept. Thanks for documenting it. Now to see if I have the courage to do what the responder has recommended. Have you followed his advice and - were you successful? "16 Lizards" wrote: When I hit the red 'x' atop my OE express, nothing happens. The OP has not responded back in 2½ days. That said, as long as you follow
the directions, you will not hurt anything in trying. I know a few people that delete dbx files on a regular basis, but this is not necessary if you follow the precautions. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "travel412" wrote in message ... That wasn't so difficult - thank you very much for the comprehensive
directions..Nice to have the delete function once again. "Bruce Hagen" wrote: If you have trouble deleting messages, Deleted Items is probably corrupt.
