The Giganews server decides whether, or not, to include your posting IP address. I am using 'msnews.microsoft.com' to post this; the policy is to include my posting IP address in my headers. I *could* use 'news.sf.sbcglobal.net' to post this; their policy, also, is to include my posting IP address in headers. Aside from the ethically challenged use of open proxies, I believe one service which does not include the posting IP address of its subscribers is Supernews. Comcast can't control the exposure of your IP address, whether in news, or email headers. The server at the far end of your connection *needs* to know it in order to return any information that you have requested. If you connect directly to any server I run, I will see your IP address. I can post with this one and as far as I can tell I am not exposing my addy and can not be traced without outside help. So far so good. As I said: A matter of server policy. Teranews doesn't include your IP address in the headers. That is beyond the control of your ISP, though. Strictly up to the NNTP server administration policy. I guaranty you that Teranews knows your IP address; they can't return the data you request if they don't have it. I am sure that Teranews knows my IP and that does not bother me as I am not intending to do anything other than posting to hard core political groups. I know there are other ways like tunneling to no log servers if you really need a higher level of secrecy. Some take secure payments like cash and other forms on less traceable transactions. TOR and others have been recommended but no need in my case. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

This is just informative rhetoric, BTW. You, personally, seem to be comfortable that the folks upstream from you are cool with your IP address. I don't find it especially troublesome that my IP address is out in the open. The only thing it hampers is my ability to run "Socks". Puppets, not proxies. ![]() I am not sure if I understand what you have presented. I am not concerned what service has my IP or any personal information as long as it is not in the open for easy viewing by everyone on usenet. I am not involved in any illegal activity or even spaming. I just don't care to be stalked by one particular sick individual. When you ask "do you trust them" is what confuses me as what would they do other than provide information to those that would have a reason to request it? Am I missing something? -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
