I am getting 'failure to connect to [mail server]'
on pressing the Send and Receive All button. It doesn't make sense. It happens after I log off and then log on. I am the only user, and I have administrator rights. Otherwise mail still works, I just cannot log off then log on. It has only been happening for the past two days. The last thing I did with Windows XP was install 4 security updates that came together. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all related software, OE6, software modem, updates. What actually changes on relogging in? It is the same user before and after, me. Thanks. |

Are you talking about the Logoff on the Windows Start menu?
What do you have to do to get e-mail working again? The full text of the error message would be helpful. That includes the server name, server type, port number, socket error code, SSL, etc. For best results, copy/paste the error message rather than retyping it. You should be able to highlight the message text in the error window (hold down the left mouse button while dragging the mouse over the text). Then press Ctrl-C (hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the C key) to copy the highlighted text to the Windows clipboard. You can then paste that text into the problem description using the Ctrl-V key combination. Is your anti-virus set to scan e-mail or are you using any-anti-spam software? Either of those could cause the problem. What type of Internet connection do you have? Dial-up, DSL, cable, etc.? What do you have in OE at Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Connection? -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Barrabas" wrote in message ... I switch off the automatically use script option and it makes no difference. My other settings aren't anything special as far as I can tell, POP3, the right mail server there. It was working okay a few days ago. I tried to notice anything different in processes running between relogging in. I found that a Java Collaboration Server was running before and then disappearing after relogging in. I have set it to manual start now, so it is usually not running at all, but this has made no difference. "Michael Santovec" wrote in message ... Frank I had responded to you in a different steam previously;however, now i
have fixed the problem. I resolved my problem by working through an online MS utility that validated the installation of the MS Genuine advantage tool. It found an error with the installation of the MS office validation active X controls. I let the web based utility correct the error. I also reinstalled the recently installed Windows Media 11 player. Not sure which was the solution but the problem is resolved and Norton is up and running just fine and had nothing to do with the issue. I am running Norton Internet security 2006 with Spam filtering and AV as well as Norton system works Premier 2003. As I suspected neither of the Norton products had anything to do with the problem so I suggest you stop advising people to disable Norton and look a little closer to home (ie Redmond). Just my two cents:
Norton is a third party program and must adjust to MS, not the other way around. Norton may not have been the answer to your problem, but Norton products are responsible for so many OE problems such as wiping out entire files and folders, changing server settings, disrupting mail server connections and much more. E-mail scanning does cause many problems as well, and is not needed regardless of what AV program you use. If you think that some of us are too eager to blame Norton for problems in OE, it's because it is so very common. As you know, none of us work for MS and are all volunteers in these newsgroups. As for myself, I occasionally have someone I know ask for help with an OE problem and they ask me to come to their home. If they are using Norton, or McAfee, I tell them that I will help them if they let me get them another AV that works well with OE, such as NOD32, Avast, or AVG. If they don't agree, and insist that Norton is great, then I tell them to find someone else. And that would include my mother if she had a computer. I will not waste my time helping anyone with and OE problem that is using Norton, or McAfee and refuses to consider that those programs are gods and couldn't possibly be the cause. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "lpdf" wrote in message ...
