Default Compounding removed all inbox messages

There is no place to import them from. Unless you had already downloaded
KB918766, (Which would have put a copy of the dbx files in the Recycle Bin),
as stated in my reply:

If you are using a fully patched version of XP/SP2, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918069/en-us

you will need DBXpress and run it in Extract From Disk mode.

I tried this; "To restore your mail folders, open OE and click File|
Import|
Messages| OE5 (or OE6 if OE5 is not listed)| Message store directory, then
browse to the folder containing your old messages.", and I get an error
message - The specified message store could not be opened, it may be in
use
by Outlook Express."

If you could simply advise on how to get the compacted inbox imported
back,
that would be great! Thanks.

Compact, not compound.

The two most common reasons for what you describe is disruption of the
compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or
bloated
folders. More on that below.

Why does OE insist on compacting folders when I close it?:

About File Corruption:

Recovery tools:

If you are using a fully patched version of XP/SP2, see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918069/en-us

If not:

DBXpress run in Disk Mode is the best chance to recover messages:

A general warning if you don't want to lose your messages in the futu

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user
created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

And backup often.

a fellow coworker still uses OE 6. She was prompted to compound her
files
and selected yes. Now all of her inbox is gone. I found the .dbx
files
for
her inbox, sent, deleted, etc., but am having trouble restoring them.
How
do
you restore the compounded messages that were removed?
