I tried this; "To restore your mail folders, open OE and click File| Import|
Messages| OE5 (or OE6 if OE5 is not listed)| Message store directory, then
browse to the folder containing your old messages.", and I get an error
message - The specified message store could not be opened, it may be in use
by Outlook Express."

If you could simply advise on how to get the compacted inbox imported back,
that would be great! Thanks.

A general warning if you don't want to lose your messages in the futu

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

And backup often.
