I'm looking for a message that I sent back in March. However, for some
reason my sent items folder only goes back to late april. I haven't removed any of the messages or compressed them or anything. Is there any way to find the lost message? Thanks in advance for your help. Rob |

You say you've not removed or compacted them (not compress, compacting
just recovers wasted space that remains after deletion). Determine the location of your message store folder (Tools/Options/Maintenance - Advanced tab and click Store Folder button). Then close Outlook Express and use Windows Explorer to navigate to that store folder. In there do you find any DBX files with a number appended (i.e., "Sent Items(1).dbx")? If so those files were corrupted since you do not compact them and Outlook Express created a new one, without corruption or a number appended to serve in its place. Post back with your results since there are 3rd party utilities that can recover information from corrupted files, such as those as www.oehelp.com -- Jim Pickering MVP-Outlook Express/Windows Mail Please reply to newsgroup only so that others may be helped with your feedback. Jim,
Thanks for your reply, There were no number appended files. I'm sure that isn't a good sign. would these files be permanantly deleted or placed in the deleted items folder? No, they would be files that were determined to be corrupted by Outlook
Express and new ones created. If you do not have any, you have not yet experienced corruption but you might if you don't compact your Store folder routinely. Might want to review the info in this article for some reasons why you should compact: The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx -- Jim Pickering MVP-Outlook Express/Windows Mail Please reply to newsgroup only so that others may be helped with your feedback. I'll do that, thanks
That doesn't really help me to find the email message that I sent back in March... Do you have any ideas on that? Might try going to the Sent Items folder, then click on the Menu bar, View/Current View and make sure that "Show All Messages" is specified. If that's not the cause, then someone (you or some other user) might have accidentaly hit the Del key while the message in question was highlighted. And in view of the time elapsed, the possiblity of recovering it are really pretty slim. -- Jim Pickering MVP-Outlook Express/Windows Mail Please reply to newsgroup only so that others may be helped with your feedback. |
