If that is all that DBXpress can find, then that's all that is there. I
suspect that the 360 may be correct before the file is compacted, i.e., the
difference is due to the number of messages that have been deleted from that
particular DBX file since it was last compacted.

E-mail scanning has been responsible for losing messages.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

This is from Symantec, but applies to all anti-virus programs.

Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning?

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Tell your IT department that if they want to use Outlook Express to get rid
of McAfee and do not replace with Norton. Both are problematic with OE.

Get AVG, Free or Pro:

or:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww

IMHO, a business should be using a more stable e-mail client such as MS
Outlook.

They are wrong (and ignorant). As long as the anti-virus is running in the
background it will stop you from saving or opening any attachment that
contains a virus. I never have email scanning turned on and often run
without any anti-virus whatsoever and I have never contracted a virus.
McAfee (and Norton) email scanning have a long history of deleting messages
and entire folder contents.

Email antivirus scanning, along with antispam scanning, can introduce errors
into the stored message files. The DBX files are extremely susceptible to
corruption and for that reason, we do not recommend you use any product for
email scanning. If you insist on using such products for email scanning
(while not disabling them totally since they do provide a useful service)
then I'd recommend you backup your mail store folders daily, at a miminum,
since corruption of the stored messages is almost inevitable.
