Default Help! cant access hotmail acct thru Outlook Express

All,

Strange problem. From my primary machine acct I'm not able to access my
Hotmail accts thru Outlook Express. However, thru that same machine acct I
can use OE to access my Earthlink acct. Ive trieswitching identities but
without success. However if I log on to the 'guest' acct on the same machine
I can readily access Hotmail using OE. Ive deleted and reinstalled the
hotmail mail acct in OE and Im not able to even download the folders. Here's
the message I get:

Redirected

Configuration:
Account: Hotmail
Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
User name:
Protocol: HTTPMail
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 80004005

What think, any ideas?

Env: WinXP SP2 all latest patches applied. Pentium IV 2.53mhz, 30GB free
disk.

Default Help! cant access hotmail acct thru Outlook Express

Most of the time, the error indicates problems on MSN/Hotmail's end (despite what they may say). Otherwise, here are some things you can check:

Make certain your time, date, and /time zone/ settings are correct.

IE ToolsInternet OptionsPrivacySites type in

hotmail.com
live.com

and Allow Cookies for each domain, in turn.

How to Manage Cookies (IE6)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283185

Troubleshooting Secure Sites in WinXP SP2
(Hotmail and .NET Passport should be treated as Secure Sites)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870700

Temporarily disable your firewall, any "system" tools (NSW, NIS, anything by Norton or McAfee) and pop-up/ad blockers to see if they're interfering.

If you use a router, you may need to adjust MTU values: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315008

IE ToolsInternet OptionsAdvancedHTTP 1.1toggle on/off; "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" must *not* be checked.

IE ToolsInternet OptionsSecurity[zone in OE runs; should be Restricted Sites]Custom LevelUser AuthenticationLogontoggle between the setting choices here ['Prompt for Username and Password' and 'Automatic...current Username...' works for me.]

Resetting either or both of the above Tabs to the defaults might help, too.

Default Help! cant access hotmail acct thru Outlook Express

Thanks PA Bear,

Thanks for your advice, at the moment somethin seems to have worked though
Im not sure which.

I added "live.com" (already had hotmail.com) to allowed sites list
changed custom level to 'prompt for user name and password'
added 'live' and'hotmail' to trusted sites (using https prefix)

thanks again

daniel
