Default unknown error while sending message

When I try to send message with a few MB attachment in OE the message is
sent but I get an error: "some of the operations were not successful, see
errors below" or the like. The problem is there is not even one error
message in the usual place (errors tab of the send/receive dialog). The
problem is quite annoying because the message is eventually sent multiple
times. On another computer (different account but same server) everything
is just fine.

This is usually caused by an anti-spam program or and anti-virus set to scan
email.

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection. After doing so it may be necessary to reset the server names in
OE.

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."

"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
saved to your hard drive."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01100907323806

"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled
and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
definitions."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection, it may be causing the problem, and even Symantec says
it's not necessary:

paste

A "few MB attachment"? Are you aware that attaching anything adds a markup
of ~35% to the email? Add a 4MB attachment to a 10KB message, and you've
got yourself an email exceeding 5.4MB.

Sending such large attachments isn't an efficient way of transferring such a
large amount of data. Try using FTP or the "Send a file" feature in any
Messenger instead. Or burn the data to CD/DVD and snail-mail it.

This showed the right direction, but what probably caused such oe behavior
was that outbox.dbx was close to 2G (2047,95MB) so oe couldn't write
anything to it (well, small messages were sent just fine). Thanks for your
help.

The design limit of the DBX files is 2 GB, but OE files can get flakey
if they get over 100 MB.

You need to regularly do a File, Folder, Compact All. Since the Outbox
folder is normally "empty", that will keep the file sizes down.
Compacting recovers the wasted disk space from deleted messages.

As for the article mentioning OE5, OE version 5, 5.5, and 6 are largely
the same and problems/fixes that apply to one version generally apply to
them all. Microsoft often fails to update an article to reflect that
the same problem/fix still applies to newer versions.
