I find that when I create appointments over a year ahead (and show the time
as "Busy") the date is not highlighted in the calendar, although more
imminent dates are highlighted. (Also, some past entries are not
highlighted, despite being entered as "Busy", which makes it hard to look for
past appointments by inspection.)

What are the rules governing highlighting and can they be altered by the
user, or is my copy of Outlook 2003 simply malfunctioning?

Ten months into the future and two months into the past are the rules
governing the bolding in the Date Navigator.

the navigation calendars highlight 2 months back and 10 ahead. it can't be
changed.

However, I see that in my archive calendar file most of the "Busy" items are
highlighted, regardless of age - except that one or two are not. It is
possible that when the latter were first entered these unhighlighted events
were not marked as "Busy" but, in order to try to pick them out more easily
retrospectively, I have subsequently changed them to "Busy". However, they
remain stubbornly unhighlighted. Are they a lost cause?

What highlighting do you mean? The Navigation Pane summarizes your delivery
location calendar only, as far as I can tell.

By highlighting I mean the day numbers of the months which (in general, as
you described in response to my original question) are emboldened if the day
contains an event which is shown as "Busy".

However the 2/10 month rule for emboldening does not appear to apply in the
case of my archive calender, which shows emboldened/highlighted dates over a
period of years (but it does not highlight consistently, in that some dates
which have events are not highlighted for some reason). Looking for
highlighted days is a good way of finding details of past events, providing
the highlighting process is reliable.

Are you speaking of the dates in the Month view of the Calendar Pane itself
or in the Date Navigator (the little months that appear in the Nav Pane or
Taskpad)? I've never seen the dates in the month view bolded ever and the
Nav Pane doesn't show the archive calendar in the Date Navigator where the
10/2 rule applies.

Can you create a screen shot of what you man and post a URL to that image so
we can examine it?
