Default Inbox does not recognize an invitee as a calendar item

My boss is using Outlook 2000. When we invite him to an appointment, outlook
does not appear to recognize the email as a calendar item. Instead he just
gets an email with the subject line the appointment name and a blank email.

Any suggestions as to what is causing this.

Thank you

Microsoft offers a hotfix for Outlook 2000 to improve its compatibility with iCal/vCal 2.0 meeting requests. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823199 . Alternatively, have Outlook 2002/2003 senders avoid using reminders in the meeting requests they send to Outlook 2000 recipients.
