Default Unread / New item showing in Calendar

We have an instance where someone now has what appears like in the inbox an
unread item showing on their calendar with the bold number 1 next to the
Calendar. What might cause this? He says he has not added anything new in
the calendar and no meeting requests or anything have apparently come in. I
am sure this is simple but can get this one figured out. Thanks!

Open the Calendar folder and from the view menu choose the day/week/month
view to see it as you would normally

he could accidently dropped something in it. Use Advanced Find or switch to
a table view to locate it - or just r-click on the folder and mark read.
